Overview

Baku is one of the world’s great cities. The walled old town oozes medieval Eurasian charm, while the ocean walkway, fountain filled squares and pedestrianised tree-lined streets wouldn’t look out of  place in rich Monte Carlo or Dubai. The center is so clean you could eat off the ground, the girls dress like life’s a catwalk, and the nightlife is the best in Caucasus. (That’s not saying much though, I personally prefer Yerevan’s vibe, but Baku rates no.8 in the world according to Lying Planet…joke). It may be pricey than Armenia and Georgia, but get what you pay for. Great city.

The Girls

Aysel Teymurzadeh

Appearance: Azeri girls are something else. They are the darkest and most ‘Middle Eastern’ looking in the Caucasus. They are also ‘cuter’ than their neighbours. The typical Azeri girl has jet black hair, often curly, with sallow skin. Their average height is 165cm (5 ft 5 in) and average weight is 65 kg (144lbs), giving a BMI of 24: lower than most Western European women, but not as slim as Italian or French women.

The best thing about Azeri girls is the way they take care of themselves. Azeri girls dress the most feminine of any country I’ve been to in Europe.  Even at lunch time on a Tuesday, the main squares are flooded with girls done up, with their hair and make up perfect, strutting around in high heels with the finest couture. Taking a daily stroll, it’s not hard to stumble upon a couple of 7′s and 8′s. The quality of girls is actually better during the day than the night. The average standard may be above average, but finding a true stunner (a 9) is hard. This fact was hammered home by the fact that the hottest girl I met in Baku was actually from Uzbekistan (granted she was a belly dancer). Overall, they rate slightly better than Georgians (mainly because of how they keep themselves).

Demographics: Over 90% of the city’s population of 2 million are ethnically Azerbaijani but there is a sizable expat community. Most of the female expats are Russian.

Attitudes: As a whole, Azeri girls are the most conservative in the region. The average age to get married is 23 (with some married off  as young as 14 in rural areas). Approximately 75% of Azerbaijani girls are virgins before marriage. This is a Muslim country, and although the vast majority of Baku girls couldn’t give a shit about religion, conservative attitudes towards sex remain. Locals automatically label locals girls who go to bars as ‘hookers’. As you can imagine, a lot of investment is required. To quote a friend of mine who lives there, there are basically three types of girls in Baku:

1) The pretty conservative ones (the majority). They goes home early, don’t drink, don’t go to clubs and bars, and are controlled by daddy. Unless you want to end up married to them don’t bother.

2) Working Ladies. A small number of poor Azeris who work as prostitutes with the Russians in Baku’s infamous subterranean ’Disco Clubs’ (brothels).

3) In Betweeners. Girls who occasionally drink, but say they don’t. Who go out, but not too late or too often. If you manage to talk to one of those it all comes down to her, (which nationality is she into) and how much you are willing to pamper her.

You’re only bet is with the last group, and they are not in abundance. The upside is Azerbaijani girls make wonderful girlfriends. They are super feminine, sweet, romantic, smart, loyal and very approachable.

Gaming Strategy: If you’re really determined to meet an Azerbaijiani girl, day game is the best option. Fountain square is the best place to pick up. Approach the younger girls (early twenties) as nearly all girls 27+ are married. If you arrange a date, make sure it’s early. Most girls have to be home by 9 or 10pm. Don’t push hard on day 1. Suggest a coffee, but bring her to a pub. This way you can test if she drinks. If she does, only one or two drinks will probably get her drunk. The way to an Azeri girls heart is old school Cassanova game. Be romantic and get her to imagine doing things together in the future.

To be frank, if getting laid is your priority, I wouldn’t recommend you focus your attention on Azeri girls. There are a good few Russian girls and other expats out at night time. Some of them are keen (I had one who even approached me on a date and asked for my number). The only problem is some of most venues are serious cock-fests (worse than anywhere in the region).

Baku has a horrible case of ‘big village’ syndrome (like every Caucasus capital). Everybody who drinks and goes out knows everybody else who drinks and goes out, so thread carefully as you’re likely to see the same faces again and again if you’re here for any extended period of time.

The Dirt

Accommodation: Ideally, stay somewhere between old city, fountain square and Sahil metro stop. You want to be as near Abdulkarim Ali-Zadeh street as you can.  I made a great contact who can offer a selection of great apartments with Wifi and multiple bedroom in the area from $35. Check out renthome.az. We stayed in a fantastic apartment for $40 a night here — a few minutes walk from the nightlife.

Getting High: 80AZ ($100) for a for a matchbox. Talk to Turkish guys at night to steer you in the right direction.

The Nightlife

The nightlife scene in Baku is split into three distinct groups. The first is the numerous ‘disco clubs’ or brothels. These are expensive and full of Soviet hookers. A bit of craic as a spectacle, but not really a good place to pick up a good girl. The second type of joint is a ‘Azerbaijan-style’ disco. Most of these are large, in the suburbs and are very expensive and pretentious with Russian-style ‘face control’. They’re usually filled with couples and the upper classes. Not recommended. The third type is normal pubs and bars which have live music, expats and liberal locals. This is the type of venue you want. The good news is that most of the action is concentrated is a small area.

Finnegans Irish Pub

An Irish pub only in name. This place is only really worth it’s salt on the weekend. Live music and a laid back crowd. Not a bad place to warm up as it’s just around the corner from my other picks. Pics here.

Otto

Otto by day

This is probably the best bar in the city. It’s a relatively large cellar-like bar with live music and pool tables. There is also a good mix of expats and locals, with a few hot Russian chicks working there. The vibe is cool (when not too packed with horny Turkish guys on Saturdays). Make sure you check this place out. Location here. Facebook and pics here.

Phoenix Pub

It’s small, but fun…probably my favourite bar in Baku. By the end of the night you’re eyes should be sore from smoke and you’re feet sore from dancing. I found that the most liberal girls in Baku frequent here and rate it the best place to pick up. They also have live music on the weekends. Location here.

Another place recommended to me by locals was a mega-club called Pacifico. It’s a bit out of town with strict face control, but the quality of women is supposed to be the best in the city.

My Baku Experience

I really enjoyed Baku. I was there for 5 nights, dated two girls and stuck gold in the process. Not only did I catch the most difficult of flags this year (Lebanon was the next toughest), I also met one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met. She was beautiful, educated and we had the same interests and beliefs. She always acted and dressed like a lady. We met near fountain square and I took her to an pub to introduce to Irish culture via Baileys. On our next date, she cooked a local dish for me, took me for a picnic, brought some wine and we fooled around in my bed. Things would get very heated between us, but she was a virgin (or so she claimed) and nothing happened. She also had to be home by 10pm every night. On the last day, she came over to my apartment to collect some jewelry she left behind. One thing led to another and we ended up making love. Great experience. We plan to meet again. In my opinion, Azeri girls are definitely babymama material.

Experience of Others

I asked others to share their experience of the city.

Brian, 25, my travel buddy for the whole trip, simply had this to say.

Class. Baku was easily my favourite city in the Caucasus—if not of all time.  The girls are much nicer than in Georgia. Their style and the way they keep themselves is not like anywhere I’ve ever seen.

Adel, 30, from Lebanon, who has lived some time in the city, lays down the law.

Well to be able to describe Azeri girls you need to understand the people, whereby a great sum of them have neither seen nor heard about logic, common sense or reason in their life time. Combine that with the general behavior of a female you get “Azeri Girls”…which makes their behavior rather impossible to explain/understand so don’t try…. just go with the flow.

As for hooking girls up, it ain’t about being tough, its all about your pick [the 'in betweeners' as mentioned earlier] and luck. All in all, it’s neither impossible nor hard to talk to an Azeri girl, given that the general population is super nice, which is very pleasant  - and a draw back at the same time. As my German friend advised me, ‘they don’t know how to say no, so they say yes to every thing and than never show up.’

When it comes to expat girls, it’s the normal drill, nothing new. They are what they are. Normally they prefer to hang out with foreigners as well for all the above reasons. For a single guy travelling there who wants to get laid, assuming he is an average looking with average money and average amount of intelligence, my advice is to learn the language (Russian, Azeri or Turkish), then you’re in the game.

Top 10 Destinations in West Africa

Posted in Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Togo on August 31st, 2011 by Naughty Nomad

West Africa

Having traveled this route through West Africa, I am lucky enough to have visited all eleven countries on the coast from Dakar to Lagos.

Using my Top 10 destinations in South East Asia as a template, I will using the following criteria.

These places/countries are judged on:

  •   - Natural beauty / Historical wonders
  • – Unique Experiences offered
  •  - The Chill-out Factor (Off the beaten track, smoke etc.)
  • – The Craic! (Irish term meaning fun or entertainment)
  •  - The Girls  (the real X factor)

So here they are…

Naughty Nomad’s

TOP 10 Spots in West Africa!

;)

——————————————————————————————-

10. Cap Skirring, Senegal

Photo I took of beach bumming cow

In a word: Moo.

I’ts got an alright beach with lazy cows.

Meeting random cows on the road and the Beach. Enjoying fresh fish by the sea where you effectively rent the whole restaurant. The atmosphere is enhanced when the owners come out with the Djembe drums.

Many hotels have pools and you’re not far from the beach. Smoke is easily available, albeit overpriced considering the area is touristy by WA standards.

Night time options are limited but the two or three venues open late are really good fun.

A decent gaggle of friendly girls around at night. Most speak French.

Bottom Line: The best that Senegal has to offer, but that’s ain’t saying much.

——————————————————————————————-

9. Senegambia, The Gambia

Sugar mammies are everywhere in Gambia

In a word: Simple.

I’ts got a pretty good beach and a laid back village feel.

Checking out all the old grannies getting stuck in the young local guys… Hilarious.

Hammocks, beach, weed everywhere – not a bad spot for chilling.

Good Restaurants and wild nightlife (but only one or two options). Check out my Gambian Coast guide for info.

Party most nights with a good few girls about at night. They come from all over the region and nearly all speak English.

Bottom Line: Better than Senegal, but local guys can be pretty bothersome.

——————————————————————————————-

8. Labadi Beach, Ghana

Typical Labadi scene.

In a word: Slick.

  Beach and babes, that’s enough.

Smoke Sheesha and check out a beach concert.

There’s lots of people around but your still by the beach drinking, it’s hard not to relax.

Plenty of people having fun partying. After sundown it sedates but during this is probably the best spot for partying during the day in WA.

Loads of sexy chicks from all parts of the world strutting around in bikinis. This is the best place in Ghana to pick up.

Bottom Line: Wicked hang-out. I’d score it higher if wasn’t surrounded by crappy Accra.

——————————————————————————————-

7. Lake Aheme, Benin

This is Voodoo country

In a word: Juju.

Quiet lake with beautiful sandy shores.

The eco-tours there are excellent. You will learn traditional fishing methods and you learn all about voodoo. If you’re really lucky (as we were), you get to witness a voodoo sacrafice.

A 5 star set up with no tourists. Smoke available. Grab a beer lakeside and enjoy. The lake is the perfect getaway from the capital Cotonou.

Not much going on, but at weekend’s there is a local disco.

A lot women walk around topless, but are conservative in every other respect. Wasn’t there on the weekend but I’d imagine you’d try to be sold someone’s cousin. Not a place to pick up chicks.

Bottom Line: For me, West Africa’s ultimate chill out spot.

———————————————————————————————-

6. Togo (in general)

Waterfall near Kpalimé

In a word: Pleasent.

Between Lome’s pristine sands and butterfly walks in Kpalimé’s beautiful forests, Togo ranks high for natural beauty.

Learn about coffee & coca plantations on a guided tour exploring the area around beautiful Kpalimé. The guides are great too.

Lomé is West Africa’s most chilled capital. Kpalimé got some nice waterfalls if you willing to trek to see them.

Lome has a laid back vibe but it hosts West’s Africa’s biggest nightclub! Check out the Lomé city guide to get a better feel for the nightlife.

A few nationalities about. Not the easiest place to pick up but still very doable. VIP Privé club has some fine women.

Bottom Line: A breath of fresh air on the road from Accra to Lagos.

——————————————————————————————-

5. Monrovia, Liberia

Liberian girls like to share.

In a word: Threesome?

Not great as beach isn’t up to much and apparently quite dangerous.

Having girls call to your door late at night for threesomes. Before they rob you that is…

City isn’t so hectic. Roof toop bars are the best places for unwinding.

Liberia by night is truly an adventure. Check out my Monrovia City Guide for more info.

Girls in Liberia love to f**k. I never had to refuse so much sex in my life as I did here. The only problem is knowing who to trust. But dam, Liberian girls are a little addictive. Hence the high ranking.

Bottom Line: West Africa’s most off the beaten track country is well worth it.
——————————————————————————————-

4. Lagos, Nigeria

This is Lagos.

In a word: Chaos.

Nada. Although Victoria Island has some nice parts.

Some the world’s worst traffic and daily dealings with bribery and corruption.

There’s weed around, but not much places to chill.

The craic in Lagos in unrivaled. The place is exhilarating. Probably the wildest nightlife in West Africa. Plenty of options with cheap beer and live music.

Arguably the best looking (and friendliest) girls in Africa. You’ll understand if you read my Lagos City Guide.

Bottom Line: You haven’t been to Africa if you haven’t been to Lagos.

——————————————————————————————-

3. Cote d’Ivoire (in general)

World's BIGGEST church in Yamoussoukro

In a word: Magnifique!

Great jungles near Liberia and lagoon views in the streets of Abidjan.

Having the world’s biggest church all to yourself (I’m not religious but wow!). Enjoying the Marquai bars.

The capital is really laid back and it’s not hard to get your hand on weed from the Marquai bars.

Nightlife in Abidjan is mega. Biking from the Liberian border is also an epic jungle trail.

The sexiest girls I’ve experienced in Francophone West Africa. Often friendly and well educated too.

Bottom Line: For many who visit the region, this is their favorite country in West Africa.

——————————————————————————————-

2. Guinea (in general)

Water in Fouta Djallon

In a word: Unexpected.

With many of the region main rivers originating in the Fouta Djallon, this place is filled with mountains and waterfalls. For me, the most beautiful country in the region. Beaches in the capital.

The Journey from hell. Ultimate jungle treks. Having to put on hoody because the chill in the mountain air (a welcome temperature change).

Taking a swim over a waterfall. Weed is abundant. Very chilled. Even in the capital you can find quiet moments by the beach.

Conakry has a pretty decent nightlife and displays great variety. The beach parties are a blast too.

The Fula girls are gorgeous. English isn’t that prevalent but with a little French you can bag yourself a hottie.

Bottom Line: Reminded me of Ethiopia… my favourite country in West Africa.

——————————————————————————————-

1. Freetown Peninsula, Sierra Leone

Lumley Beach

In a word: Heaven?

Jungle mountains by the sea. Fantastic beaches.

Being able to smoke joints in nightclubs.

Beach bars with hookahs? Aberdeen is the ultimate chill out spot. Everyone smokes and it’s not problem in some restaurants even. You can even buy joints in clubs.

Wild nights, every night. Options are limited, but the venues are Grade A. Beers are cheap too. Freetownians really know how to have a good time. Check out my Freetown city guide for more info.

It’s very easy to pick up in Freetown 5/5. Only Monrovia is easier. You can find some real gems here as well. There’s also Lebanese and other expats for the taking.

Bottom Line: Beautiful scenery,  loose women, weed and cheap beer in clubs = awesome. Easily the best location in West Africa!

——————————————————————————————-

Honourable Mentions

I decided to only include places I’ve actually been in the top 10. As such, the list above only covers countries on the coast from Dakar to Lagos. I contacted some fellow globe-trotters to give their top 10 on the route as well. Here are some other picks from fellow travellers…

  • Robertsport, Liberia
  • Goree Island, Senegal (I’ve been here. Good escape from Dakar but very small.)
  • Ganvie, Benin
  • Kokobrite, Ghana (Been here. It could have made the list if I had went on the weekend)
  • Sine-Saloum Delta, Senegal
  • Bissagos Islands, Guinea Bissau (nice place, but get out of Bubaque and explore further)

Overview

It’s raw, rough and all over the place, but fuck it. Conakry grows on you like E-coli on room temperature British beef. It’s additive. I’ll give it whoever wrote the blurb on the Lonely planet website, they hit the nail on the head:

Conakry is a city with a somewhat split personality. It has an erratic infrastructure and growing crime rate so, like with many cities living under rotten regimes, a visit here can be frustrating for travelers. On the other hand, Conakry is an undeniably pulsating place: colourful, spontaneous, friendly, musical, a little wild, and always full of contrast. The city’s vibrancy and openness come from a very African flavour. These more subtle charms are likely to grow on you with time and many people end up loving the city by the time they leave. It’s tailor-made for a (long) weekend blast.

The Girls

If you haven’t already, I’d strongly recommend  you read my article Sex in Africa 101 before continuing.

Miss Guinea 2010

Guinean girls are some of the best in Africa; they are often very beautiful, genuine and friendly. This is the only country in Africa where the super cute Fula tribe form a plurality (40%). Other significant populations are the Mande groups Mandinka and Susu, the latter of which mainly reside mainly in Koloum. The capital city receives little or no tourists so you will find it pretty easy to  pick up serious hotties. The catch: basic French is usually required. But trust me, a little goes a long way here. Also, Islam is the dominant religion and most women do not drink alcohol (but still party). During the day, there’s often parties on Ratoma beach with loads of cute girls. Otherwise, Kaloum is your best bet for wealthy women and girls with jobs. If you are Pipelining, do so in French. . The night is still the best option, no matter what type of girl your hoping to meet.

Tip: Try learning a little Fula. It’s easy and the girls love it!

Nightlife Recommendations

You can have what ever type of night you want in Conakry. I stayed in both Koloum and Ratoma so I got to experience the whole myriad of venues in the city. Some of this info you find anywhere else. Here are three solid recommendations, starting from the classiest place in town to the sleaziest.

Crisber

This slick joint is in northern Ratoma near Taouyah, and attracts the young, rich and beautiful. This is the best place to find ‘good’ girls from wealthier families. The standard is here is sky high. Models also frequent the club. The only problem is, it’s a bottle service kind of place. As a result, the beers are a little pricier and  it can be slightly cliquey. Busy most nights, but show up late. Out of the three, it has the highest quality girls but is also by far the hardest to pick up in. Crisber is very much a local haunt so some French is crucial.

Colisium

Located in Taouyah, this place is probably the best option for a night out. It’s a nice big place with a decent dance floor as well as a cool outdoor bar. It’s busy most nights and attracts a mixed crowd of good girls, bad girls, locals and expats. The beers are also cheaper than the other two places. It’s not going to blow your mind, but definitely worth a punt. Don’t show up before midnight.

Bembeya Nightclub

This is Conakry’s dirty little secret. Hidden in upper class district of Kaloum, your taxi driver will probably have to ask for directions. Unlike the other venues, it’s free in (when we were there) but the beers are the most expensive in the city (€2, o no!). This is probably because male patrons don’t stick around too long. Women will fight for your attention.  Some of the girls her are stunning! The best looking girls in the country come here to charm those with deep pockets. That said, it’s easy to shore. You will either love or loath this place (I loved it!).

Getting High

Where to buy marijuana: If you are visiting the Fouta Djion, get it there. In Conakry, ask the guys at the Reggae bar a few doors up from Collosium.

Prague Marijuana Prices: For €1 we got 5 small packs: each enough for two or three joints of pure herb.

My Conakry Experience

Apart from problems getting money, changing accommodation three times and the odd scam, I loved Conakry. Five days wasn’t enough for me. I found the people great and the city extremely diverse and engaging. We went to a great concert on the beach and each night was completely different. As for chicas, Gary the fish and I  both hooked up. In fact, the fish got himself a temp-girlfriend for awhile. Suspecting she had ulterior motives and paranoid she had spies in the area, he subsequently not only made us change hotels, but move nearly 10 km away in Koloum. Although I was slightly agitated by his inscrutable actions, it all worked out for me. It was here I hooked up with this breathtaking Malian girl on our last night. The new flag  aside, she was probably the most beautiful woman I was with on the trip. I almost stayed. Sigh… if only I  had one more night. (another popular song in West Africa)
