Recently, the largest global expat network released survey results showing the top expat destinations for 2016. Below shows some of their findings. Click on the image for a bigger view.
I can attest to some of these rankings.
All the guys I’ve met who’ve lived in Taiwan rave about it, and it often tops the poll as their favorite country.
And out of all the 99 countries I’ve visited, I choose Malta (the no.2 slot) after living in NYC because I thought it was the best possible option for me within Europe. As I mentioned in my last podcast, the women are gorgeous, the weather is amazing, the booze is dirt cheap, and anybody with decent tech skills can make a killing, meaning you can party every night and still stack a ball of cash.
However, compared to other countries on the list, it’s nowhere near the shag-fest that is Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
So what about single guys who are looking for a good time?
I managed to find the male-only version.
Note that countries like Vietnam and Colombia jump up the list, obviously because of the women. However there are some glaring absentees and unjust placings.
Firstly, where’s the rest of South East Asia?
Austria and Cyprus? Yeah right. I mean Nicosia is nice, but it’s no Tokyo.
If you’re like me, you’re probably not feeling this list at all.
Eastern Europe is also severely under-represented. What about Budapest? Krakow? or Belgrade?
But when you think about it, it all depends on what your doing for work. Most of the people in this survey are expats, not digital nomads.
You’re not going to make a lot teaching English in Bangkok.
Digital Nomads versus Expats
For those of you who are digital nomads, there are several other lists that are far more exciting.
The nomad list, for example, is a great go-to in this category. Conflating this list with the one above, others, and from personal experience, travelling and talking with other expats, there are few places that consistently make the list (and have sexy-ass women).
- Thailand
- Cambodia and the Philippines
- Bali
- Colombia
- Brazil
- Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Cape Town (I’d move there in the morning)
- Poland, the Baltic, and Eastern Europe in general
What’s your opinion?
Where do you think is the best place for male expats/digital nomads?
i agree with your list, for guys who like hunting pussy
you pretty much sumed it up
SEA,SA and EE are the places to be as a young man
Agreed, Go East, young man!
I’m thinking about moving next year to either Cape Town, Malta, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, US, my number 1 would be Cape Town. Fingers crossed and hopefully I’ll find a job!
Dominican Republic
The DR is very transactional but if that’s your thing then yes I agree.
Despite all tourism the DR is big enough to escape the tourist traps however Decent Spanish is a must.
Why Philippines is not on the list? I would assume due to very cheap costs of living. Working online from Manila could be nice option for expats. You can read here: http://tomcreanslife.blogspot.ie/2016/09/philippines-nice-start.html
When I visited it first few years back I was full of positive opinions. Now I see Philippines is not paradise only but for sure it is worth visiting either as expat or tourist.
Enjoy reading
I did include it in my personal list.
Mark, what do you mean by guys with decent tech skills? Is there a big digital nomad scene in Malta?
Big time. Most work in the iGaming industry. Seo, front and back end developers, designers, content, copywriters etc…
I’m a programmer, graphic designer, web developer.. have been for 10 years. I’m 32 years old. What would be my first step to using my skills in a place like malta? How do things work in regards to the tech scene there?

if anyone is interested in my travel story from Philippines, here is new post: http://tomcreanslife.blogspot.ie/2016/10/philippines-part-3-beers-and-mangos.html
when did the head coach of indiana move to the phils?
after a recent trip to cambodia i wouldn’t include it on a list like this…. it is clearly at the bottom of any best countries in SEA list
worst infrastructure, dirtiest, weak nightlife, worst food, girls that are either hookers or wanting a husband
very little to offer other than an easy visa and low cost of living… but even with the low cost of living you get what you pay for
