When doing research for my recent trip to southern Somalia, information online was almost impossible to find. Basic info on accommodation and security took hours, if not days, of trawling through every corner of the web.
There was NO decent information about visiting Mogadishu.
Until now.
Screw Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Wikitravel, and Bradt. Naughty Nomad is the only source that has you covered – the one travel outfit that has the balls to do the groundwork in the world’s wildest frontiers.
Step 1: Getting a Visa
The best place to organise your visa is at the embassy in Addis Ababa. For most nationalities all you need is one passport photo and $50. That’s it! Just fill in an application form at the embassy and you’ll get you’re visa in within the hour. However, sometimes it take you to one day. We had to wait 24 hours at the consulate was not there to sign the visas.
For more info you can email the embassy directly at somaliembassyaa
The embassy is located just west of Bole road, 10 mins from the Somaliland embassy. You’re best bet is just ask a taxi driver to take you there.
Please Note: A Somalia visa will not suffice if you’re visiting Somaliland in the north. You need to visit their embassy to get that (which has recently moved just west of Bole Road. The process is more or less similar with a same day turnaround.
Step 2: Organize Logisitics
You will not get past the airport without local contacts, so I’m here to help.
Today, I would like to announce VISIT SOMALIA tours… a safe way to visit the city and it’s surrounding, at a price that’s affordable. Please note, I make no money from this site or venture, I’m simply doing it out of passion for fellow adventurers and the Somali people, who have struggled throughout the last two decades. Future travelers NEED this site and the information on it.
Our crew had a great time in Somalia and want others to visit. There has never been a better time to visit, with Africa’s longest coastline just waiting to be discovered. And so, I’ve helped launch the very first tourism project in the country, which have been recognized by the Somali government and been featured Somali TV. This venture was devised with a bunch of trusted British Somalian guy who have returned to their homeland after peace is slowly being restored. These guys saved my ass countless times and showed me an AMAZING time.
Visit Somalia caters for everything from hotels, tours, security, transport and nightlife. Hell, if you even want to meet some Somali girls while your there, just talk to my guys!
Tours offered include the site of Black Hawk down (tanks are still there), Jezira beach, Bakaara market, Lido, City Ruins, Nightlife and more!

ARGH!
This is interesting.. though I was expecting a follow-up of your St Paddy’s Day experience with the Omani chick
Nice idea but at least get a self hosted website and proper URL if you want the site to be taken seriously. At the moment it doesn’t look very professional.
Fantastic!
Best of luck tp Jay and his mates!
A.
nice, man. cool idea.
I’m seriously considering it, but I kinda liked this part: “Luckily, we at Visit Somalia have you sorted! We are the only company to provide safe (100% safety record)”
Yeah no shit, you’ve only had one customer and that’s a crazy irish motherfucker. Except almost being blown up by a suicide bomber, how dangerous is Somalia nowadays?
It’s actually probably the safest it’s been in over two decades.
not very safe…. I wouldn’t go walking around.. and I work in mogadishu

I spoke with him Saturday and he said he would contact you. Try calling him @ 00252618100102/615214074
I’ve rung a few times now. No luck. I’ll keep trying. Has he got my emails?
Got through to him last night! It’s on! Can’t wait!
Daniel, have you visited Mogadishu already? Can you write a short report here? Is Visit Somalia working?
I had a great time. I was there for four days. I didn’t really know what to expect (or why I was going) but I had a great time. I visited refugee camps, amazing beaches; saw the old cathedral and climbed up the old lighthouse; went to the site of Black Hawk Down and climbed on the armoured personnel carriers. I rode in a tuk tuk, went swimming, walked through Bakara Market. Nothing was too much for Jibril to organise the security was great. They were there but never really blocked me from doing anything. I thoroughly recommend visiting and using Jibril at Visit Somalia.
Daniel – could you get in touch with me through my website? I am in contact with Jibril as well, hoping to visit Mogadishu in December. He promised to write me after we talked on Skype, but so far, I haven’t heard back from him. If you don’t mind, I would be very interested in some practical info. Many thanks!
Either this is a spam, a really bad joke or a totally irresponsible offer. Mogadishu is arguably the most dangerous capital City in the world. Saying the situation is better now isn’t the reality, unless you consider the arrival of ISIS an improvement. So you’d need to be clearly suicidal before going because having your head cut off online is most likely the most fun you’ll have there. Or I guess being a jerk might work too, I mean who else would visit refugee camps as a tourist ?
I will say also, stay away from pirates. I got a line on a tour with those dudes and thought it would be fine to go on some runs but those fuckers are whack. In addition to wanting me to pay my way they wanted me to pay for their ammo and I swear to god they tried to fuck me. I don’t mean they just wanted to rip me off… No. They literally wanted to have sex with me. I was like WTF? I’m not bad looking but gay dudes never come on to me. That was a deal breaker for me. I’m not trading my ass for a boat ride even if it does come with a chance to get shot at.
