10 Things Awesome about New York

1. The Subway System

subway__astoria_nyc_by_eligit-d54ouxt

It’s extensive and it runs 24 hours a day. And for $30 a week, you get unlimited rides not just on the subway, but on buses too. Unlike other US cities like LA, transport is never an issue and nobody has to worry about drink driving.

2. Bar open till 4am

AustraliaDay2012-Belushis-146

Speaking of LA, last call for booze is at 1.30am. WTF? That’s a joke. New York is one of the very few places in the US where bars don’t finish up till 4am. If I’m doing a late night writing session until 3 in the morning, I can still nip around to my local for a pint and pick up a chick.

3. Variety of women

…and speaking of picking up chicks, there are few cities cities on the planet that rival NYC for its ethnic diversity. Black, white, Asian, Latin, Indian—whatever you’re in the mood for, you got it.

4. 24 hour Delis

I fucking love NYC delis. You can stumble home at 5am and you’ll find one open on almost every street corner. Want a sandwich? You can choose from a dozen flavors of chicken and 10 types of cheese. And don’t even even get me started on the toppings and sauces.

5. Drugs

Drug dealers are almost as convenient as the delis. They set up shop at a specific location, keep regular hours and even rotate shifts. At certain corners or building entrances I know I can show up at any time between 3pm-5am and I’m guaranteed a dime bag. Some of them even text you holiday specials and deliver!

6. You can travel the world without leaving the city

I can have Ethiopian food with a Korean in Spanish Harlem, Mexican food with a Belorussian in Chinatown, or grab an Afghan kebab with a Jamaican in Jewville on the Upper East Side. How awesome it that?

The other day I was craving Khinkali, a national dish I enjoyed in Tbilisi, Georgia. I Googled Mapped it—nearly 10 restaurants came up!

7. Things to do

The High Line

The High Line

Museums, sight-seeing, the theater, parks, beaches, nightlife, comedy shows, free events, classes for this and that…the list goes on!

You’re never bored in NYC!

8. The Barbers

screen-capture-42-450x293Especially Dominicans. An odd inclusion, but any guy who has lived here knows what I’m talking about. These guys are artists. They don’t just cut hair really well, they sculpt facial hair to perfection. When I went back home I missed my barber more than I missed some of my girlfriends!

9. Speakeasys

More than meets the eye.

More than meets the eye.

Speaking of barber shops… have you ever been to one with a secret nightclub in the back? Or a hot dog place with a phone booth that opens into a cocktail bar? That’s some James Bond shit. NYC has several speakeasys that have blown my mind.

10. The Skyline

‘Nuff said.

You need to net 8k/moth to live there and not have to stay in the projects or sketchy areas though, right?

I live in a beautiful doorman apartment in a great neighborhood. My monthly expenses are only around $2-3 a month.
Aside from the massive rents (mine is a little under $1000), you can actually get by pretty cheaply in NYC.

Are the girls in NYC hotter than LA?

What’s it cost to live in NYC?

    • Naughty Nomad February 25, 2015 at 9:46 pm #

I’d put them on a par. Perhaps LA has a higher average, but NYC has the numbers.

holy fuck just blew my mind. With a city like that why even travel. Theres more secret entrances and clubs and set ups then any other place in the world as it seems. NYC is the city….planning to get your green card?

Miami is also great too apperantly when it comes to diversity too. Plus from what Ive heard and seen, its seems like NYC or vegas or american citties(or western for that matter) has sexier foregin women then the motherland has. Like hot mexican jamican dominican, indian, middle eastern, african women are way way better looking then their motherland counterparts.
NYC vegas miami apperntly just seems like they import only the finest wines across the world.

I agree 100% about the girls… NY girls are great!! I’ve been living in Colorado for a year and a half now and I’m riding my bicycle back to NYC as soon as the weather clears up!! – I gotta say though, if you grew up in the pre-9/11 days the modern version of the skyline will always look weird…

Number 6 sounds very good, have you tried going to any of the “littles” for some flaghunting?
How many flags are you up to now?

    • Naughty Nomad April 8, 2015 at 1:30 pm #

I’ve retired from flagging at 65. It no longer gives me pleasure.
