First Manosphere Film!

The first red pill film from the Manosphere is out!

“I can do better” is my first short. It was shot in New York with 10 actors and explores themes like hypergamy, female entitlement and spinsterhood. Enjoy!

(I star briefly also. Scroll down for the Russian version.)

Description:

In the age of you-go-girlism, many western women no longer want to settle.

But what happens when she ages and her options run out?

Russian version…

Good for a first film! I liked the way it was shot, were you the DP? How do you like being a filmmaker?

    • Naughty Nomad January 20, 2015 at 10:15 am #

I was DP, yes. I very much enjoy working with film. Although I hate ADR. Had to do it for the whole film best it was a guerrilla project.

Nice work. Impressive. Looking forward to what’s next in the pipeline.

Haha I recognise one of the actresses whom I met before. Small world…

    • Naughty Nomad January 20, 2015 at 10:14 am #

      Which actress?

      • Irish January 20, 2015 at 10:25 am #

The friend in the first scene Jan Marie, met in a club couple years ago when I just moved to Singapore. Bit of a character…

        • Naughty Nomad January 21, 2015 at 10:51 am #

Ha! That’s gas. She’s a good friend of mine.

Nice movie! Well done and interesting. I just don’t really understand the point of showing three beautiful and loving children at the end. It’s almost a validation of her stupid selfish life choices. As if she’s very happy and the perfect mom after all…

    • Naughty Nomad January 20, 2015 at 9:35 am #

They are a figment of her imagination. That’s the point.

      • Lika January 20, 2015 at 11:11 am #

Lol I didn’t get that. Maybe it’s not made so clear…

        • JJ January 20, 2015 at 7:45 pm #

Seemed clear as day. They faded out and she was in the room alone.

          • Lika January 21, 2015 at 10:56 pm #

Actually I showed it to my gf and she also thought they were her children or grandchildren. It seems that it is unfortunately easy to miss the part where they vanish or to think it is just a normal cinematographic trick to indicate that time has passed after her children left.

      • Isaac January 20, 2015 at 2:06 pm #

i got it. i like how her prospects are less and less “alpha” through time. Just missing some cats at the end though lol

      • Brian Mark January 26, 2015 at 6:36 am #

I enjoyed the film. I didn’t get the fact that the old lady’s family was in her imagination. I think when she enters the apt maybe you can edit it to show them fading in so that it is clear that they are not really there.

        Keep up the good work!

I have to comment on one of your tweets that fits in well with this video.
        You said,

“In New York, you literally need to go through 100 girls to find one that’s worth a 2nd date. Femininity is such a rarity here.”

Mark, welcome to America! I have to agree your statement 100%!!!

        • Lee January 26, 2015 at 9:38 pm #

          Ok-
but where can a man go to find a feminine woman?

  6. Nigel January 20, 2015 at 4:00 pm #

    Nice film

  7. Aldo January 20, 2015 at 11:52 pm #

Nice video. Good stuff. Those girls always thinking they can do better..

  8. Andy January 20, 2015 at 11:57 pm #

I could not take you seriously, the way you were kind of upset that she didn’t care to see you more… Right haha

Though your facial expressions were good. Nice acting!

  9. Catlover January 21, 2015 at 10:30 pm #

Missing some couple hundred cats at the end.

    • Brian Mark January 26, 2015 at 7:10 am #

LOL! Perfect ending: the three family members fade out and in their places are 3 cats. The cats are eating the cookies and lapping at the tea she brought out!!!!

    Zolo
Are you really a guitarist or is it just for the film?

    • Naughty Nomad January 28, 2015 at 9:19 pm #

Yes. I was a professional musician before I left for New York.

I really hate to say this but this video sucks fucking dick. The acting is stilted and the dialogue is completely uninteresting. The only people I can picture watching this are 22 year olds trying to get in a warm up want before they “finish” while reading some dumb ROK article. Seriously Zolo you are the biggest Geed who ever lived; I would rather whip my own sack with an extension cord, then watching this uncreative, dull, and cliched piece smegma ever again. This sucked. I want my ten minutes back.

P.S. If my son ever wears his facial hair like you, I will pin a douche to his shirt and make him walk around school with it on for a week

  14. Dude February 3, 2015 at 3:09 am #

Guys do the same to women buddy. We think we can do better. The whole thing was just frikkin embarrassing man. If there’s no chemistry on the woman’s part then there is no chemistry. What do you want them to do? Go out with us because they feel sorry for us? Why did you put your name to that piece of crap? It was like a school kid project.

Nice movie,I don’t understand why it has some bad reviews, maybe is not the best compared with hollywood, but for those who understand concepts of the manosphere is perfect.

do you know any other films where concepst like hypergamy and many others are discussed?(like in the film)

  16. Filmguy February 21, 2015 at 11:38 am #

Before I go into my thoughts, let me just say that I’ve done the PUA thing but haven’t gone full-out redpill as the philosophies don’t really appeal to me (If anything, I dig Zan as far as whole manosphere thing goes), but I travel a lot; have done my fair share of pick-up; and some of the articles on this site are cool so I check in every once in a while. Your martial arts article gave me motivation to take up a combat sport, so you have my gratitude for that.

    First comment ever here though.

Okay, preamble over. Cutting to the chase if you don’t want to read an essay: Even at ten minutes this film was a slog to sit through, but hey, making even a ten minute film is a pain so congrats. This is why I figure I’ll take some time to write out some proper feedback as everybody gets better by it.

I’ll start with the good first: You say you’re the DP and you have a very good eye for location scouting and shooting guerrilla. It’s kinda cookie-cutter and nothing that will win awards, but it’s competent and attractive – the opening shots especially are gorgeous and perfectly exposed. My only gripe would be that some of the shots with the bald guy are a little soft in their focus. It happens. Just try to shoot at an F/4-5.6 and bump up the ISO to compensate (using a film grain filter through the whole thing should compensate for the noise you’ll get).

Also, the color correction is pretty nicely applied throughout, although again a little cliche. Whatever, cliches work – you got warms for the happy young times and cool blues for the sad old times and they convey an emotion. The ending was effectively bittersweet for me in how it was shot.

Now the negative: Your characters talk too much. This is a problem with any low-budget production, especially those that rely on a “message.” Your out to make a work of propaganda and that’s fine. The problem is that for propaganda to be effective it has to grip us first. Otherwise you’re just preaching the choir.

What I’m saying is that everything is on-the-nose. Instead of telling us how great his guitar skills are, why not have it be something like the dude is actually playing for a rapt audience just out in the street or even in her/his pad personally and then she talks with her friend about how “She can do better?” The whole club scene with the wedding didn’t even need a single word besides “I can do better” if you had just conveyed it with knowing looks and close-ups of his bald head in contrast with her growing wrinkles.

It’s clear that none of these people are trained actors or at least that the ADR is mucking them up (You should have invested more time in mixing the audio by the way, I nearly turned the thing off by how stilted and unmixed it sounded less than a minute in). A simple fix would have been to have music or simple short sentences instead of these long speeches trying to spell everything out. Could have cut the film down to a cool even 5 minutes too.

In an age when ambiguous stories like LOST or Breaking Bad get record viewership, you should give your audience credit to figure things out. Hell, by utilizing the tools of the mainstream, you can even convince people that there might something to your thinking after all.

For making a blunt statement with a film effective, I recommend this: https://vimeo.com/49425975 It’s also on the nose and painfully obvious in its technophobia, but it is effective because there is an obvious craft and something thoughtful in what it says. Plus, it’s just 3 minutes long. Not a big investment for something preachy and hey those phones look frickin’ sweet!

This film also has a thoughtful message in not letting opportunities pass you by in the hopes of getting something “better” when maybe you already have something “Pretty damn good.” Just focus on that.

Thanks so much for your input. It’s my first film and trust me, I know “I can do better.”
