A Second Chance

Did you ever visit somewhere and come home thinking it was heaven on earth, then return to the same place a second time and be disappointed?

Yes?

It happens all the time. We look back on our experiences with rose-tinted glasses and romanticize about the places we’ve been.

But often our experience and not the actual place is what influences our opinions.

When you get a few of your buddies together, go somewhere sunny and throw in drink and women,  even hanging out in the biggest shithole on the planet can still be fun.

You’ll come back and tell everyone, “Man, that place is great! You gotta’ go!”

If you got laid there, hell, you’ll love the place!

But if you return to the scene of the crime rolling solo in winter, perhaps you might see it for what it is – a shithole. Like a bad one stand – you wake up sober the next morning and the angel the night before is now a smudged hog.

I’m sure if I returned to cities like Chisinau, Addis Ababa, and Dili, I’d probably  rate them lower than I do now. They were shitholes, but I got laid there so I remember them fondly.

Perception vs Reality

It’s hard to be objective.

I’ve had readers travel to certain places on recommendations from this blog, then send me angry emails because they hated the place. It’s happened with SkopjeConakry, and Kuching – all towns I fell hard for a local girl.

Clearly, I’m bias.

The truth is unless you spend a significant amount of time in one place, you’ll need to visit it a second or third time to really get a feel for it and make an assessment.

So what about the cities or countries we’ve been to and hated?

We do the same things. We might have a bad experience and associate that feeling with the location. We remember all the bad bits, demonize the people and tell our friends, “Don’t bother going to there.”

But really, what should you do?

Give it a second chance.

I think Egypt was the worst country I’ve ever visited.  But I willing to give it a second chance.  It was my first Middle Eastern country. I was young and naive. I met bad people. I didn’t party there enough. I went during June when it’s unbearable hot, etc…

Next time, it might be different.

I went to Russia and thought it was the second worst country I’d been to. But I’m willing to give it a second chance. My Russian was non-existent at the time. I had no game. I travelled there with my parents.  I got drugged, robbed and jailed.

Next time, it might be different.

In January, Israel depressed me. But I’m willing to give it a second chance. I only visited Jerusalem – a city full of neo-Zionist bigots. I should have avoided making sound, logical arguments and supporting human rights like an idiot. I went to the frontlines of the conflict, and spoke to young people freshly brainwashed from the army. I should have went to Tel Aviv where people are more liberal and less zealous.

Next time, it might be different.

I thought Goma in Eastern Congo was hell on earth. But that’s because is was war-ridden toilet covered in molten lava full of refugees with no food or electricity.

Next time… wait – fuck that, I’m never going back to that hellhole again!

But you get my point.

Many places are not worth going back to, but some places deserve a second chance.

You shouldn’t skim over sections either…

Yes, I agree 100%, if you get laid even in a shithole country, you’ll probably want to go back. Most places seem nicer in pictures than they actually are. This holds especially true for girls even more than places. How many times have looked at a picture of some pretty girl that you laid and said Wow! What you forget is all the hell that bitch gave you when you were with her! But in the picture she looks great!

I went to India but got deathly sick about ½ way through the trip and was ready to go home way before the end. But the end we finished in Goa at the beaches and I didn’t want to leave and ever since, I was thinking about all the parts of the India I didn’t get too see and have wanted to go back.

My first cruise I hooked up with a girl and was with her for the week. Second cruise I went through all the girls within the first 3 days, so was bored as could be and never went on another.

I think people aren’t being realistic if they expect to replicate the experience of someone else. a lot of these places NN visits are developing countries and are undergoing massive social change. Also, NN is a ballsy MF. If you aren’t as adventurous, a bit shy or even had a salmonella filled sandwich you’re probably not going to have the same experience.

Ive pretty much had an awesome time wherever I’ve travelled… except when I got diarhea. Then again, I’ve had mates who went into the wrong bar, locals didnt take a shine to them and kicked their arse. But they just saw it as bad luck.

When you go overseas, or even go out tonight, remember that the night you have relies to a certain extent on luck.

Wise words. Shit, this even can happen with individual bars.

Sometimes the stars aligned at an ordinarily shitty place. Other times, the place is off and on. Sometimes you hit a spot at a low point.

You rarely know unless you try it a second or third time

    PUA in the news!

The Asian Playboy was just interviewed in ABC News Nightline. From what I saw in the interview, it looked like PUA is not about getting laid. He made me realize it is about having the confidence. Watch how he smashed the stereotype. http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/asian-playboy-smashes-stereotypes-15839024

Tel Aviv is very, very different from Jerusalem. When you’re in Jerusalem, you feel like you’re on the frontier between East and West, Islam and Judaism, with both Christianity and modern secularism caught in the crossfire. In comparison, Tel Aviv looks like an American city pulled out of California and placed onto the Levantine coast, with the signed rewritten from English and Spanish to Hebrew and Arabic. You’re almost caught off guard by how little concern Tel Aviv denizens feel about the Arab-Israeli conflict. It’s almost like a dirty secret they’d prefer to keep quiet about.

Your initial findings on Egypt were correct. Been on three seperate occasions. Went Han Solo. Went with 2 amigos. Met a girl there.

    It sucked every time.

worth 10hrs of your time. tops

Lmao great point about a bunch of buddies chilling drinking and saying that the place is the bomb! When in reality,if one was solo, didn’t f-close anything,it would’ve been a different story.

Egypt sucked? What sucked about it? I’m a female so maybe my perspective is different but I loved the pyramids, the Nile, the souks/bazaars, the coffee, the food, the friendly families I stayed with (hospitality off the charts!) and the men are handsome.

Well I gave you a second chance, and see that you just lie your ass off. Maybe other naive fools buy your BS, but I’m out.
