Greetings from Syria!

Hey amigos,
Sorry I haven’t posted in the last week. The internet over here is brutal.

Sorry what has the Nomad been up to???

Me in Umayyad Mosque, yesterday.

Well you know I love dodgy places so I’m in Damascus, Syria with two other crewmembers.

This place is AWESOME!!!

Ok the nightlife is kinda shit, and they’re are dozens of people supposedly getting killed everyday…. but the beer is cheap, the girls are cute and we have beautiful old town all to ourselves. It’s amazing…. the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world apparently.

The locals here love Mexican Pirates. Even cars stop in the middle of the road and call out,

“Welcome to Syria!”

More interestingly, every single person we spoke to actually support President Assad – and these were very educated, travelled people. We were even present for pro-government demonstrations (and got them on camera).

I’m not sticking up for the regime, I’m just giving you the reality of popular opinion on the streets of Damascus.  There is obvious bias of the foreign media. You really don’t know what’s going on in a country until you actually go there.

That said, reports from outside the country say over 100 were killed here in the last two days. I woke to the drone of helicopters… it feels like a fucking war zone.

Anyway, aside for that, let me tell you about own little uprising. In case you wondering – yes, don’t worry, I’ve still found time to be a little naughty as usual. I’ve slain my first Arab and got my Lebanese flag in the process!!! She fell for my pirate charm.. ARGHHH! Not only that, but she may be the most beautiful women I’ve ever been with (but I’m bias towards the Arabic look).

Ah… the Siege of the Levant is going well..

Sex, War and Piracy… a favourite Naughty Nomad cocktail.

Nomad, enjoy Syria! You’re definitely as cool as der cucumber for heading out there. Also, much thanks for the ground level tip on what the political situation is across there. If we needed anymore proof of the propaganda machine that the western media is, this is it.

    Wow. Syria is hard core.

You should consider the fact that they are telling you they support Assad because they are concerned that if they say anything else Assad’s forces will kill them.

Or they really do support Assad because their families are part of the elite pro-regime clique and when Assad is removed they will all be killed by the anti-Assad forces.

    Good luck. Don’t get dead.

I’d like to read a field report for your Lebanese flag!

I was already happy to get drunk in Damascus and was impressed that you scored there until you mentioned Lebanese.. . Wait until you reach Beirut, you’ll never want to leave this place. Night clubs are the wildest of the Middle East and beyond with unbelievable women. Main challenge (when you’re broke) is that they are attracted to wealth more than anywhere !

The people in Damascus are much more supportive of the Assad regime than their counterparts in the countryside are. Assad has really invested in Damascus and improved the quality of life in the city, whereas other parts of the country have been stagnating. The Assad regime is also secular, whereas if the rebels in the countryside take over, it’s very likely that the new government will be Islamist.

The Assad regime has been pretty awful over the past year in the countryside, but I’m sure it seems better to plenty of alternatives to the people in Damascus…

Yeah, Damascus is truly beautiful, and with the genuinely most friendly people I’ve ever met.

Was there last Easter a couple of months after it all kicked off and everybody then was supportive of Assad too.

But adding to what Sid said above, most people in Damascus are Shiite, Christian or Druze and live in fear of the prospect of a Sunni Islamist state if the opposition get into power.

And with the Western powers and Sunni Arab leaders arming and funding the opposition forces in order to ouster Iran’s closest ally, it’s looking to be a grim year for Syria.

Hopefully they’ll still be as friendly to us in years to come…

good going. it seems to be from your experience and others, that going to a country when theres a conflict can be the best time to go. theres no other tourists (may be a few foreign media) and the locals respect you big time for coming. met a couple who went to egypt during the arab spring and they had an awesome time!

The nightlife is actually pretty good. Some very steamy bars in the new part of the city just walk around after dark and you’ll begin to get a feel of where to hang out. Have heard stories about clubs out in the desert full of iraqi refugees..

Love Syria and love the Syrians. I am certainly not endorsing Assads brutality on some people but I can’t help think that the militia trying to overthrow him may even have a darker slant.

I don’t know why the west are trying to unsettle the current regime, what’s the alternative?

NN: you are correct about the lying, miscreant mainstream media brainwashers. The New World Order is currently mopping-up the last few countries not under its World Bank control: Syria, Iran and N.Korea.

I guess it’s the mention of where to get drugs…

so the people you supported support assad? did you travel to homs by any chance, or any of the other places that the government is murdering its own citizens? Going on a lads weekend to the heartland of the dictator is not going to give you a balanced view! And, yes, the bbc news is reliable, i dont believe they make up their footage!

    • Naughty Nomad February 14, 2012 at 8:25 pm #

      @Dave: I don’t support either side.
I’m not offering balance, just relaying facts on the ground from my own personal experience.
I never said the BBC we’re making up footage. WTF?

  13. dave February 14, 2012 at 3:08 pm #

trevor, i looked at the website you mentioned above. It is not an ‘in-depth’ analysis! It is the self important ramblings of a very deluded man!

  14. dave February 15, 2012 at 2:50 pm #

NN, that wasnt aimed at you, it was to Trevor who has a paranoid view of the mainstream media ‘brainwashers’! ha ha…conspiracy theorists are so deluded…
