10 Reasons to Visit Ethiopia

Having done a fair amount of travelling in nearly sixty countries, I often get asked about my favourite spots. A place close to my heart, Ethiopia is always first on my list. Here’s 10 reasons you should visit…

1. The Women are Gorgeous

Fershgenet Melaku

This is Naughty Nomad so this is obviously the first thing that comes to mind. The women of Ethiopia have some of the most exotic and beautiful women on the planet. They have perfect bone structure, cute noses and beautiful skin glazed in a bronze, caramel hue. As for their bodies – they are wonderfully slim with great breasts and plump apple booties. They also smoke weed, listen to reggae and know how to dance, cook and truly please a man. Sounds likes a dream eh? Ethiopian girls rock!

2. It’s Cheap

Ethiopia is one of the cheapest countries in the world. Try 10 cent for coffee, beers for less than a dollar and a room for less than $5. You can live like a king here. I was there in 2007, where you could get 12 Birr for a Euro. You can now get 22 Birr for a Euro!!!

3. There’s TONS to see and do

Lilibela

Here’s just some of the places you can visit in the country:

  • Gondor: The camelot of Africa.
  • Lilibela: 13 churches built into the ground.
  • Rift Valley: Safari anyone?
  • Shashmane: Rasta mecca.
  • Aksum: Rumored to have the Lost Ark.
  • Harare: Walled city where you can feed hyenas!
  • Bahar Dar: Lake monasteries and stunning waterfalls.
  • Addis Ababa: The crazy capital where anything goes.
  • Any café: Did you know coffee was first cultivated in Ethiopia!?

4. No Tourists

Ethiopia is notoriously hard to get to overland. When you travel the country, you will hardly ever see another traveller. It feels like you have the country all to yourself.

Blue Nile Falls

5. The Landscape is Spectacular

Ethiopia is awe-inspiring. It has an incredibly diverse landscape, from mountainous rainforests where waterfalls flow, to epic plateaus and steppes,  to barren wastelands stretching the Oganden dessert. It seems behind every corner there’s something that takes your breath away.

6. Culture is Abundant

A rich history…

Ethiopia was the only country on the continent not colonised in the scramble for Africa. This isolation has kept Ethiopian culture intact.  There are dozens are tribes, all with their own unique traditions and rituals. The main  language is known as Amharic, which even has its own alphabet. Ethiopia was one of the world’s first Christian countries (4th Century) and is also the spiritual homeland of Rastafasti. The name Rastafari is taken from Ras Tafari, the pre-regal title of Haile Selassie I, composed of Amharic Ras (literally “Head,” an Ethiopian title equivalent to Duke), and Haile Selassie’s pre-regal given name, Tafari. The colours synonymous with reggae (Green, Yellow & Red) are derived from the Ethiopian flag. Queen Sheeba was also said to bore the 13th tribe of Israel here.

7. The Food

Ethiopian food is an experience. Various spicy, delicious dishes are plonked on a large pancake-like stable know as injera.  The whole thing is a communal affair and is eaten using your hand. Some Ethiopian girls will even hand-feed you.. it’s so fuckin’ sexy.

yummy!

Rastastic!

8. The Ganja

Weed is everywhere in Ethiopia – it’s part of the everyday life. If you’re a smoker, welcome to paradise! I once bought a kilo for $4.50 in Shashamane.  The quality can vary, but you can get Grade-A stuff in the capital. Most young people smoke too.

9. It’s the Cradle of Mankind

From all the scientific evidence, it is suggested our species originated from in the Rift Valley in Africa. Some of the world’s oldest humanoid fossils have been found here. Ethiopia may be well be our first home. Visiting the country feels like a pilgrimage for any evolutionist, humanist, atheist or agnostic.

BOOM BOOM BOOM!

10. The Nightlife is Fantastic

The nightlife is Addis Ababa is like no other. Every night there’s a party going on. You got everything from classy jazz cafés, to cool reggae bars to sleazy nightclubs. Ethiopian dance style employs the  shoulders and is a sight to behold.  The girls are dressed up and drool worthy. With any luck, you won’t go home alone!

😉

So there you have it…

Man, I can’t wait to return!!!

I have an Cheeky Addis Ababa City Guide if want to know more!

Feel free to leave a comment.

What’s your favourite place and why?

Hey Nomad, so I’ve been to neither Ukraine nor Ethiopia and I’m planning a visit to one or the other from reading your blog. So if I had to choose one which would you recommend over the other? Thanks!

  3. NomadicNeill February 27, 2011 at 9:59 pm #

I’ve never thought about travelling to those parts of Africa. I guess I prejudiced views about the continent.

What led you to try out those kinds of countries?

    • Naughty Nomad February 28, 2011 at 1:02 pm #

@Nomadic Neill: To quote a recent post of yours :Fuck it.
I wanted to go Cairo to Cape Town.

    • Naughty Nomad February 28, 2011 at 5:47 pm #

@Sonso There’s few online that do any justice. Plus, you’d be surprised how many girls of that quality exist there.

I had visited Ethiopia several times and i know what i am talking about.you are wrong about “women from north” thing.First of all Ethiopian women are so beautiful secondly they are not only from north they are form south, east, and west too. so next time please don’t post some thing stupid like this.I thought you are introducing your country not tribe……. you know what i mean…..the backward thinking is still their sad 🙁

    • Gebre September 9, 2013 at 2:37 am #

Its his opinion. If you tell me you aint got preferences I tell you you are a hypocrite.

  12. kukusha April 13, 2011 at 5:36 am #

Not only I visited Ethiopia ,i lived there for years. If any plan to travel there,DO IT.people are so kind.Ethiopian girls are so gorgeous.I don’t recall most people smoking weed but i know it’s very cheap over there.food is so good. especially people in the cities can speak basic English with out any problem. lots of place to visit .GREAT PLACE

  13. lulu April 14, 2011 at 12:56 pm #

Its a beautiful n more or less accurate comment except for the weed part, I dont know abt the town of Shashemene since there are a lot of Jamaicans there its possible but people dont smoke weed in Ethiopia much, they even hardly smoke cigarettes, even in Addis u wont see, specially on the streets, more than 1 out of 10000 girls smoking!!

  14. Yasna May 8, 2011 at 12:43 pm #

I am an Ethiopian now living in Europe since 2007. I had a chance to travel and meet people from all over the world and from my experience, I can tell you that Ethiopia will be at least as good as other great experiences. It is a tradition to make foreigners feel home. Just go there with open mind and ignore all the dark image given to Africa. You will enjoy the food, the night life, the sex, the history and culture, and especially the kindness of the people. Weed is not popular there, not even cigarettes!!. You won’t get any trouble for smoking weed in public!

    Nomad,

I have about ten days to kill, Dec 29, 2011 thru Jan 8-9 2012. I’m a lone traveller 48 years old and am looking for a great travel experience. Would Ethiopia be a good place to go for a guy my age?

  16. jibriel the somali nomad July 30, 2011 at 3:27 am #

  19. bharat December 20, 2011 at 6:42 am #

I have been to Ethiopia. Must say that its a very good country, the people are warm and hospitable ,very friendly, girls are the hottest i ve ever seen . Many women have taken to prostitution due to lack of opportunities. But the biggest problem is that 9 % of people in Addis have AIDS. Knowing this, how can one even think of sleeping with the prostitutes ? Where does one meet the normal girls ? can anyone give me some ideas. I think joining the university is a good option to meet decent women.

  27. TheViking March 14, 2013 at 5:11 pm #

    Hi Nomad,

After reading your blog I´m DYING to go to Ethiopia. I was just wondering how you handle your valuables? do you only bring cash with you, do the hotels have safes, have you ever been robbed?

Judging by what you have written in other posts one should expect to be hassled in the streets so I was just wondering how you handle those situations.

I would be travelling solo so I really don´t want to have my valuables stolen so any tips on how you handle your money would be great 🙂

    Cheers!

  28. TheViking March 14, 2013 at 5:27 pm #

maybe I should add that Im tall, muscular and covered in tattoos and peoples first impression of me is that I´m a criminal so I don´t really look like a victim so I´m not so worried about getting robbed on the street, I was mainly wondering if leaving your valuables in your hotel room is okay or should you bring the valuables with you (wich I´m not really comfortable with, I might get too drunk one night and then whoops) 😛

    • Naughty Nomad March 15, 2013 at 1:44 pm #

@ The Viking: You’ll be fine. Ethiopia is very safe and people there are generally cool. Don’t worry.

  29. Kronos March 19, 2013 at 5:13 pm #

    Hi NN and all others!

First, big props to your site, it really encourages travel. I just finished my science PhD and now after 5 years of exhausting lab work am ready again for some adventure…after reading your Ethiopia experience, I just booked a flight to Addis Abeba. It seems safe, even if you travel on your own, right?
Do you have any special recommendations? Any websites with realistic info? And of course, websites for “pipelining”?

Go on man, you do a great job…and enjoy the gym – it really pays off to visit it regularly.
    All the best from Switzerland

    • Naughty Nomad March 21, 2013 at 1:52 pm #

@Kronos: Stay at Mr.Martins Cosy place or across the road. It’s right beside a strip of bars in the heart of Bole. Talk to Dex J (his number is on the AA guide) if you want to get high. HAve fun. I’ve just come back. What a city!

  30. Kronos April 2, 2013 at 2:38 pm #

    Hey NN,

thanks for the advice. Can you also recommend web portals/dating sites to get in touch with local talent before going there aka pipelining opportunities?

  31. Yocd April 25, 2013 at 2:49 pm #

    Hey Nomad,

I always wanted to go to Ethiopia, I had a german ex who had ethiopian origins, beautiful curly hair, caramel skin complexion, perfect face features, body, I was pretty crazy about her but then the b*tch broke my heart. In France where I’m from, Ethiopians are not that common though so I figured I’d go to Ethiopia and pick another one up to replace and everything would be alright again…

Anyways, I didn’t go through the “plan”, met a local girl instead, got over it (french with algerian origins, atheist, you’d like her) and unfortunately never went to Ethiopia. I’d love to go but my GF feels threatened by this destination, she knows how much I cared about my ex so planning a trip there is pretty much screwed for me now….

A good naughty destination I’ve been several times is Madagascar. Beautiful girls african/asian mix looking, you can pick up whichever you like and they are down for whatever you want. It’s better to speak french though, they hardly speak english over there.

    Enjoy your travels!
